The Latest: Inside Coach Tim Thackrey's Mind
with my latest tools to get you Back in the Game!
If you've ever focused too much on the number on the scale, you've probably experienced the frustration of wondering all that goes into making it 'move'. While the scale might show a drop in weight, or a gain in weight, it doesn’t always reflect the true picture of your body composition, your performance state, and the real changes that are happening underneath the hood. People left to their own devices focus too much on short-term weight loss, and risk losing lean muscle mass, which in turn lowers our BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) and makes long-term fat loss harder to achieve and eventually backfires.
At the heart of my coaching program is building a sustainable metabolism, that creates the positive cycle to rebuild a body that is resilient and performs at the level you demand. Part of rebuilding your metabolic function is making your fueling strategy one that is built to last. When you can eat more of the right foods for you, your training sessions are generally better, you recover quicker, and it's actually easier to gain muscle & burn unwanted body fat. I mean, if you just cut water, sure you'll lose weight, but eventually you'll probably drink some water again making the scale go up, and your short term hopes go down.
When you see fluctuations on the scale, it’s easy to panic, especially after a vacation, holiday, date night, or just taking time off from your usual routine. What many don’t realize is that body weight alone doesn’t give you the full picture. In fact, I'd say it's actually one of the least meaningful pieces of data that makes a transformation sustainable [unless you're in a weight class sport - which gives it more value by necessity]. What truly matters is understanding the composition of that weight: is it water retention, or are you losing muscle and fat? Is your bone density decreasing? Is your sleep improving or getting worse?
I've been using the a smart scale [Hume Health Bod Pod] for the past 6 months - and just a heads up - I'm generally someone who does not love any fitness tech stuff until proven otherwise. Their scale & connected app allows you to see exactly where your body is changing: are you retaining water, losing fat, or gaining muscle? What's the distribution? What's the trend? With this data, you can confidently make decisions on how to adjust your diet and training rather than letting short-term fluctuations dictate your next move. Ultimately, how we use that data & understand the trends help us make better long term choices that allow you to know that you are finally on track for sustainable results.
When you obsess over daily fluctuations, you risk making panic-driven decisions. Take someone who saw the scale go up - they might feel like they'd been doing everything right, and are now frustrated. While your bodyweight may fluctuate from day to day, but it’s the long-term trends that matter most. For example, I've been tracking my body weight daily as an experiment with the new tool, and there have been no 2 days in a row where my weight was the same...but over the last six months, my weight has stayed within half a pound on a monthly basis.
So does that mean I haven't made any progress if my weight stayed the same? Well, luckily we can look into the data again - and not just performance data [aka, my lifts are going up]. My lean muscle has gone up almost 6#, and body-fat percentage down 3%. All things I'm personally looking for from a longevity & performance standpoint.
This longer-term tracking helps eliminate the short-term panic that leads many to make quick, unsustainable changes. By focusing on how your body is changing over weeks and months, you can make smarter, more informed decisions about your health, and stop obsessing over what might happen if you have an extra almond.
Muscle gain isn’t just about lifting heavy weights—it’s about where you’re gaining muscle and how it’s distributed throughout your body. Smart scales like the Hue track your muscle mass and gives you a better understanding of how your body is responding to your training. It also allows you to compare your muscle gains relative to others in your age group, giving you valuable insights into your individual progress.
This is key for martial artists, ex-athletes, & busy professionals, especially those looking to maintain muscle mass and improve strength as they age. Gaining muscle in the right areas isn’t just about aesthetics - and it's even more than performance - it’s about preserving muscle to support your metabolic function and keeping your body in top shape for live a life of earned freedom.
Your BMR [Basal Metabolic Rate] is another critical metric that the Bod Pod measures, and gets synced to my programs private dashboard I share with each client. This number gives you a snapshot of your metabolic efficiency, aka how much your burn at rest in a day, and we can easily and quickly adjust your training and nutrition plans to optimize your metabolism, improve energy levels, and support fat loss. By increasing your BMR, and combining that with recoverable activity you can actually adapt from, you stay out of the low calorie diet trap, and can actually eat more food, supporting both better training sessions, cognitive health, and recovery.
For those preparing for competitions or special events, understanding how to manage water retention is just as important as fat loss. If you’ve ever cut weight for a competition, you know the challenge of shedding water while preserving muscle. Having the data to determine how much water weight you’re carrying is critical. This you can time your cuts correctly, losing fat first, and saving water loss for a potential tool to be used in the final stages before weigh-ins.
In my Metabolic SPEED Protocol, we use this data driven approach as yet another tool to personalize your training and nutrition strategies. It's not to obsess over the scale - it's actually the opposite. It's to give context to what truly matters & make that number that pops up on the scale just be an additional data point towards your long term health.
By tracking changes in muscle mass, body fat, metabolic age, and other metrics, we can adjust your plan in real-time to ensure you're building a sustainable metabolism, maximizing muscle retention, and losing fat - and more importantly, the ability to keep it off so we can start to focus on the good stuff - actually USING your newfound fitness & living a larger life.
This flexible data-driven approach keeps you out of the short-term cycle of cutting calories and damaging your metabolism. Instead, we focus on long-term health and consistent, sustainable progress.
